What Training Do I Need?

The training necessary to become a certified medication technician or aide varies from state to state. Some states have specialized courses that they run that will train you to become a certified medication technician. Other states require you to already be a certified nursing assistant (CNA). In some states, courses may be offered at community colleges and continuing education centers to make sure you are properly prepared and able to meet your state's requirements. Courses are also available online.

If you do live in a state where it is necessary to be a CNA before becoming a certified medication technician, you need to go through a CNA postsecondary program. Community colleges usually offer these programs.

Is Certification Available?

Certification requirements for certified medication technicians and aides depend on your state. Some require the completion of an approved certified medication technician course or program, followed by submitting an application to the state board. Others require you to be a CNA, have some number of hours experience or have completed a certification exam. The exams may include both a written and a practical section. Your state may require you to take the Medication Aide Certification Exam (MACE) available through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

Furthermore, if you have additional or other medical training, you may be eligible to take a certified medication technician challenge. Instead of taking a training course, you may be able to skip straight to the examination at the end. This option is not available in all states. Please contact your state's board to find out your specific requirements.
