EMT (emergency medical technician) training is available at several public 2-year colleges in Massachusetts; you can complete a stand-alone, semester-length EMT course or certificate program; you can also select a 1-year paramedicine certificate or 2-year associate's degree program in paramedic technology. EMT programs require applicants to be high school graduates or GED holders; a paramedicine program requires EMT certification; the associate's degree requires EMT certification plus experience.

These programs may carry additional costs, such as for exams and uniforms. Class meeting times can vary. Students take lectures and labs, and they also complete field and clinical training assignments. Students who complete these programs are qualified to sit for professional licensing exams.

Cape Cod Community College

Cape Cod Community College (CCCC) offers a 5-credit EMT course that is offered twice per year. The program includes several practical skills labs in areas such as CPR, trauma situations, patient assessment and medical emergencies. Students that pass the course are eligible for state certification after passing required exams. The school notes that there may be special tuition charges for this course. CCCC also offers a paramedic training program.

The course addresses pharmacology, medical emergencies, childbirth, airway management and patient injuries. Massachusetts Bay Community College

Located southwest of Cambridge and Boston in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts Bay Community College (MBCC) offers education in an urban setting. MBCC offers an EMT certificate program that can be completed in one semester and requires six credit hours. Students gain education through a combination of lab, lecture, field and clinical experiences. Students learn to perform tasks on mannequins and a state-of-the-art ambulance simulator as well. A grade of 77% or better is required in order to successfully pass the course. Graduates are prepared to take the NREMT and state certification exams. The Office of Emergency Medical Services in Massachusetts has accredited MBCC's EMT program. MBCC also requires about $300 in book fees for students taking this program.

Students receive training via lectures and labs, as well as an ambulance simulation unit. Graduates are ready to sit for the NREMT and state licensing tests. A grade of at least 73% in all courses is needed in order to pass this program.
