Title 1 Certification

When the No Child Left Behind Act was passed, Michigan changed its teacher certification requirements so that every teacher with a Michigan teaching certification meets the requirements of a highly qualified teacher. Teachers who already held a teaching certificate were permitted to work towards the new requirements while continuing to teach.

Educational Requirements

All teachers in Michigan, including Title 1 teachers, are required to have a bachelor's degree. While there is no requirement for exactly what one's degree is in, a degree in education will help prepare one for the classroom, or one could earn a degree in the subject they intend to teach. Teachers are required, though, to complete an approved teacher preparation program while earning their undergraduate degree, and these programs usually include opportunties for students to teach in a classroom under the direction of a supervising teacher.

In addition to earning a bachelor's degree, all teachers in Michigan must pass a course that covers how to teach reading. For elementary teachers this course is six credit hours. For secondary school teachers this course is only three credit hours.

First Aid and CPR Requirements

All teachers in Michigan are required to complete a course in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This prepares teachers to deal with medical emergencies that may arise during the school day. Organizations such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association offer first aid and CPR courses.

Exam Requirements

Michigan requires that all teachers pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification content exam for the subject they intend to teach. This meets the Title 1 requirement that teachers prove they know the subject that they teach.

Certification Fees and Renewal

In Michigan one must pay a fee of $160 for the initial application for a Standard Teaching Certificate. If one seeks an additional endorsement, they will have to pay an additional $50.

Teachers must complete 150 hours of education-based professional learning in order to renew their license every five years. When the certification is renewed it costs $100. As these fees cover the cost of the support staff necessary to process teacher certifications they are non-refundable.
