EMTs (also known as emergency medical technicians or, at advanced levels, paramedics) are the first responders on the scene of emergencies and accidents; however, not all EMTs have the same qualifications. </p><h3 id="section---EMTBasicAndEMTIntermediate">EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate</h3><p>Basic- and intermediate-level EMTs provide emergency medical attention to patients on site and on the way to a medical facility. In this position, you assess patients' conditions and provide care for emergency patients, including respiratory, cardiac and trauma cases. You may also administer basic life support techniques for a wide variety of issues such as cardiac arrest, severe bleeding or fractures. These EMTs are trained in the use of medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs (EKGs) and backboards. Some intermediate EMTs learn advanced medical skills such as utilizing intravenous medications and airway devices. States differ in the scope of medical skills required by basic and intermediate level EMTs.
</p><p>Most states require basic and intermediate EMTs to have earned certification through the NREMT, which requires passing both practical and written tests. A certification candidate must possess a high school diploma or the equivalent, have completed an approved training program and passed a background check.
</p><h3 id="section---EMTParamedic">EMT-Paramedic</h3><p>This is the most advanced level of EMT. An EMT-paramedic performs the same services as an EMT-intermediate but he or she also provides more extensive pre-hospital care and can administer intravenous and oral medications. Additional training is given in anatomy and physiology through training courses. As a paramedic, you'll apply more advanced medical techniques such as performing EKGs and carrying out intubation procedures. However, paramedics don't have set ranges of medical capabilities, due to differing state regulations.
</p><p>Paramedic training programs often lead to associate's degrees, and they may take up to four semesters to complete. Certification through the NREMT requires passing written and practical examinations. Other prerequisites include completing an accredited training program and earning previous licensure or certification as an EMT-basic or higher. Generally, certification or licensing for all levels of EMTs lasts for 2-3 years, and continuing education is also required.</p>
