The goal of physical education teachers is to develop physically literate individuals who are able to move effectively in a variety of ways in order to engage in a variety of healthy physical activities. They also teach students how to understand different physical movements and how to improve their own physical performance. In addition, physical education teachers instruct students in healthy eating habits that will contribute to healthy physical performance. They encourage students to enjoy and value physical activity. They also educate students in cooperation and positive social interactions through physical activity. They will utilize a variety of equipment to teach movement, such as jump ropes, balance beams, balls, and hoops. They teach movements directly, through games, and through dance and rhythmic activities. </p><h3 id="section---Education">Education</h3><p>The first step to become certified to teach physical education in Ohio is to earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. The most common path will be to earn an education-focused degree, such as a degree in physical education or health and physical education. Education degrees will generally include the education preparation program necessary for becoming a certified teacher in Ohio. These programs will also help candidates to prepare for their licensure exams. Coursework outside of the education preparation program may include kinesiology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, motor development, sports and games, and physical education. Those who are working towards an education degree will also complete a minimum of 12 weeks of interning and a minimum of 100 hours of field experience. </p><h3 id="section---GettingCertified">Getting Certified</h3><p>After earning a bachelor's degree and completing an education preparation program, those who want to become physical education teachers in Ohio must next pass two Ohio Assessments for Educators exams: </p><ul><li>OAE Pedagogy Assessment: 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12) </li><li>OAE Content Assessment: 034 Physical Education </li></ul><p>The Pedagogy Assessment consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and two constructed-response assignments: a case study and a work product. The Pedagogy Assessment tests general teaching skills and knowledge and knowledge of the professional teaching environment. Candidates will have three hours to complete the exam. </p><p>The Physical Education content assessment consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. Candidates will have 180 minutes to complete the exam. The four primary domains that are tested are growth and motor development, movement activities, lifelong physical fitness, and the physical education program. </p><p>The passing score for both exams is 220. Both exams can be taken year-round. The fee for each exam is $105. Candidates must register for their licensure exams at the Ohio Assessments for Educators website. </p><p>Having passed the licensure exams, candidates may now apply for the 4-year Resident Educator License. The application is available through the Ohio Department of Education's Connected Ohio Records for Educators system (CORE). It costs $160 to apply for the Resident Educator License. </p><h3 id="section---ExtensionRenewalAndAdvancementRequirements">Extension, Renewal, and Advancement Requirements</h3><h4 id="section---Extension">Extension</h4><p>The Resident Educator License is a four-year license. Educators may extend their Resident Educator License for one year. The fee is $40. The one-year renewal is only for educators who were unable to complete their Resident Educator Program, unable to pass the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA), and/or were unable to finish their focused mentoring program. </p><h4 id="section---Renewal">Renewal</h4><p>Educators may renew their Resident Educator License. The four-year renewal is only for educators who cannot complete their Resident Educator Program within the time period of a one-year extension. </p><h4 id="section---Advancement">Advancement</h4><p>The next license after the Resident Educator Licenses is the Professional Educator License. This is a five-year license. Advancement requires that the educator complete the Resident Educator Program and pass the RESA. The fee to advance to this license is $200.</p>
