How to Become an Armed Security Guard

Becoming an armed security guard is different than becoming an unarmed security guard. The process usually takes longer and has more requirements. A good first step could be to become an unarmed security guard to gain experience. Unarmed security guards must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, pass a background check, receive on-the-job training, and obtain security guard registration for their state, which is usually granted once training is complete. Through job duties such as monitoring security cameras, detaining violators, controlling building access, and calling police, fire, and ambulance services in emergencies, an individual can gain the basic skills and experience necessary for a future armed position.
