Computer Network Architects
Computer network architects design and build the actual computer networks, from small office networks to large infrastructures that serve many customers. They typically create plans for a network and must present them to the management staff. They may also upgrade other network-related technologies, such as routers and adapters, to support new networks. Computer network architects need at least a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field. Some companies prefer candidates to have a master's degree in business administration with an information systems focus.
Network and Computer Systems Administrators
Network and computer systems administrators provide technical support for organizations that use network technology. They manage the organization's servers and ensure everything is working properly and is secure. They also install, repair, and upgrade networks and can be in charge of adding new network members and training them on how to use the network. These professionals need a computer-related bachelor's degree; some companies may hire those with an associate's.
Computer and information systems managers, also referred to as information technology (IT) managers or project managers, help organizations determine their IT goals and work with computer systems to implement those goals. Depending on an organization's size and needs, these professionals may be split up into different types of managers.
These titles are known as chief information officers, chief technology officers, IT directors, or IT security managers; each manager will have specific job duties, but all of them work towards the same goal. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is the minimum requirement for this career. Many of these managers have a Master of Business Administration and years of relevant work experience.
Computer Systems Analysts
Computer systems analysts are similar to computer and information systems managers in that they work for organizations to improve their systems. However, systems analysts work directly with computer systems while systems managers direct their work. Computer systems analysts consult with managers, design solutions for maximum efficiency, and devise ways to upgrade existing systems.
They also conduct systems tests and train people who will use the finalized version of the systems. This can include writing instruction manuals. Many computer systems analysts have bachelor's degrees in a computer-related field, but it is not always a requirement. Some of them have honed their skills through independent study. IT systems analyst training programs are also an option. A master's degree in business administration or computer science is sometimes preferred.
