Phlebotomy Certificate Programs in Michigan
Glen Oaks Community College
Located in the center of St. Joseph County, this school offers a training certificate to help you get started on your way to a career as a phlebotomist. Some of the courses included in this program are medical terminology, medical office lab and disease conditions. You also study technical or business communications, physiology and anatomy. Additionally, after all course work has been completed, you'll take part in a 15-week, 100-hour unpaid externship in a hospital or medical office lab. Upon finishing the externship, you'll be ready to apply to sit for the Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) exam.

North Central Michigan College offers a competitive phlebotomy program that only accepts 12 students each academic year. Admission is based on both academic and non-academic criteria, and membership in the Waganakising Odawa Career and Technical Education Program is also taken into consideration. After completing the prerequisite courses, you must take two courses in phlebotomy and one course in customer service, employability skills, skills for professional development or Anishinaabek Culture. The first phlebotomy course covers infection, safety, quality control, venipuncture and capillary or dermal puncture techniques as well as professional conduct and specimen transport. The second phlebotomy course is a clinical in which you apply procedures learned in the first phlebotomy course to a lab setting.

Oakland Community College is the largest community college in the state of Michigan. For the phlebotomy program, you're required to complete four courses to earn the certificate, and the program may be completed in just under four months. The phlebotomy course teaches precautions, specimen handling and proper technique. You also must complete a course in lab procedures for medical assisting. In this course, you acquire practical experience in handling and collecting specimens. Courses in medical law and ethics as well as terminology are also part of the program.
