Course in Emergency Medical Technology in Indiana
Indiana University-Purdue Global-Indianapolis
Any student at the university can enroll in the EMT-Basic (EMT-B) course. You'll learn about patient assessment and specific medical protocols, like ventilation and airway protection, immobilization of injuries and management of various medical emergencies. It also prepares you for such duties as helping with childbirth, dealing with poisonings and managing incident scenes. You're encouraged to buy a stethoscope in preparation for the program.

Associate Degrees in Emergency Medical Science in Indiana

You'll need to purchase a stethoscope, EKG caliper and uniform for clinical rotation. The program teaches you about a paramedic's duties as you study health situations and how to respond to specific medical situations. You take courses in pulmonology, pharmacology and trauma situations. You'll learn about working as part of a team and taking the lead on that team as well. This program requires study through summer sessions.

The paramedic science program prepares a certified emergency medical technician to administer medications and use a defibrillator in cardiac instances. You'll learn about pharmacology, patient assessment and handling trauma cases. You'll complete an internship with an approved ambulance company to gain first-hand experience in ambulance operations and complete a course in operations, which shows how medical emergencies are handled in hospitals and clinics.

Vincennes University
In this program, you'll have the opportunity to earn basic EMT certification as you learn about a paramedic's duties and tasks prior to arrival at a hospital, as well as about medical terminology and airway management procedures. You'll be required to complete 50 hours in a hospital setting and a 100-clock hour internship in an ambulance. You need to meet specific requirements, such as becoming certified as an EMT, before enrolling in the paramedic course. A Certificate of Program Completion in Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic is also available to certified EMTs.
