Although undergraduate degree program requirements vary, all medical schools require that minimum prerequisite coursework be met, regardless of the specific major. High MCAT scores are recommended; all programs require letters of recommendation and personal interviews. Competition for entry into medical schools may be difficult. While the first two years of your education include courses focusing on medical theories and anatomy, the final two years of the programs often focus on clinical experiences, allowing students to gain some hands-on experience.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - New Orleans
Located in New Orleans, the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center offers a student-to-faculty ratio of 5-to-1. Students who are accepted must purchase a laptop computer from the medical school. The curriculum in the medical education program includes clinical science courses and rotations with physicians beginning in the first year of the program. This school offers summer research opportunities and an honors program.

Similar to the New Orleans campus, the University of Louisiana Health Sciences Center in Shreveport requires accepted students to purchase a laptop from the medical school. The 4-year program consists of classroom study during the first 2 years of the program and supervised experience during the final 2 years. The first clinical year is devoted to required rotations, such as surgery and pediatrics. The second year, the final year of medical school, consists of selective and elective rotations.

Tulane University of Louisiana
Tulane University does not have any specific course requirements for entry to the medical school education program, but recommends you complete coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, sociology, foreign languages, art and music to provide a well-rounded undergraduate education. The first 2 years of the medical school education program include courses in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, neuroscience, pharmacology, immunology and infectious diseases. The final 2 years of the program, you will complete clinical rotations in various specialties including surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, psychiatry and neurology. Several combined degree programs that include an MD are available.
