What You Need to Know
Since prospective x-ray technicians in New Jersey must complete a 2-year degree program to be eligible for employment, all relevant programs offered in New Jersey schools result in an associate's degree. Upon completion of one of these programs in radiography or radiologic technology, you will be awarded the Associate in Applied Science degree. All four programs discussed in this article are offered by community colleges and combine classroom instruction, lab training and hands-on clinical experiences in healthcare settings. In addition to radiography courses, you could expect to take general education and other required courses in anatomy and physiology, humanities, science, mathematics and computer science or technology. Bergen Community College
Bergen Community College offers a radiography program that prepares you for a career in diagnostic imaging. Your curriculum includes both classroom studies (around 1,000 hours) and clinical education (approximately 1,725 hours). You're required to take both a freshmen examination and a senior exit examination; both must be passed with 77% or better. Upon successful completion of this program, you can sit for the ARRT certification and obtain a license to practice diagnostic imaging in New Jersey.

The radiology program at Brookdale Community College prepares you for immediate employment as a radiologic technologist or transfer to a 4-year college where you can pursue advanced studies. Consisting of 35-40 hours per week, the program's curriculum includes didactic studies (classroom and lab) and clinical education. You'll complete a 40-hour clinical practicum during your first summer (spread over 6 weeks) and a 3-week clinical during the second summer. In addition to general education courses, you'll study equipment operation, health care issues, radiographic pathology and 3 sequential courses of radiographic procedures.

Upon completion of all training, you can obtain certification and look for immediate employment or pursue additional education in specialties such as computed tomography scanning, diagnostic medical sonography, magnetic resonance imaging or radiation therapy.
