To become a licensed professional counselor in New Jersey, applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 graduate semester hours in a master's or doctoral counseling program. At least 45 of these 60 semester hours must be distributed across eight of nine designated course content areas.

The counseling licensure requirements of New Jersey state that an acceptable graduate degree contains the word 'counseling' or 'counselor' in its title. The program must also be described in the institution's catalog as one designed to prepare students for professional practice in the counseling field.

Do I Need Previous Counseling Experience?

LPC applicants must also satisfy a minimum of 3 years of supervised counseling experience in an appropriate, professional environment.

In order to accrue qualifying post-master's counseling experience, graduates of a counseling degree program must become Licensed Associate Counselors (LAC). Applying for this license does not require any previous on-the-job counseling experience.

One year or 1,500 hours of counseling experience may be substituted with 30 graduate semester hours beyond a master's degree.
