For many students, finding the time and money to earn a degree can be challenging. Luckily, there are many online colleges and universities, like UMass Global, that offer affordable tuition.

Keep reading to learn more about UMass Global, what programs are available, and what to expect with UMass Global tuition rates.

What Is UMass Global?

UMass Global is a private online affiliate of the University of Massachusetts, the public university system in Massachusetts.

The university started as Chapman College, a part of the Chapman University system in California. It was established in 1958 to offer programs on military bases.

The name was changed to Brandman University in 2009. When it joined the University of Massachusetts system in 2021, it was renamed once again, this time to UMass Global.

The university currently enrolls almost 9,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs and about 10,000 in professional development programs.

UMass Global is geared toward adult learners. The average student age is 36, and 51% of students have at least one dependant.

While programs are online, the university still maintains its headquarters in Irvine, California, and a satellite campus in San Diego.

UMass Global is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Its education, nursing, and social work programs are programmatically accredited.

What Programs Does UMass Global Offer?

UMass Global offers a range of programs, including associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, doctoral degrees, certificates, and credentials.

These programs are offered through the university's five schools:

  • School of Arts and Sciences, with programs like marriage and family counseling, psychology, and social work
  • School of Business and Professional Studies, with programs like business administration and organizational leadership
  • School of Education, with programs like early childhood education, general education, and school counseling
  • School of Nursing and Health Professions, with programs like Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice
  • School of Extended Education, with continuing education programs like a business writing course and a cybersecurity bootcamp

Most programs at UMass Global are offered in a traditional online format, where professors set the pace. Students have due dates but are generally not expected to log in at a specific time.

Courses are offered in eight-week terms, with six terms per year. This convenient schedule allows students to take a term or two off if life gets busy, and then jump back in a few weeks later.

Many programs through the School of Business and Professional Studies are available in UMass's self-paced MyPath format.

These are competency-based programs. You'll take as much or as little time as you need on one course before moving on to the next, and you can take as many courses per term as you like.

How Much Is Tuition at UMass Global?

The base tuition rate at UMass Global depends on three factors. These are:

  • The level of degree you're earning
  • Whether you or your spouse is an active military member
  • If your program is a traditional online or a MyPath program

We've broken down the tuition costs for UMass Global below. Please note that tuition is subject to change and may not include additional fees.

Tuition for Undergraduate Degrees at UMass Global

For traditional online programs, both associate degrees and bachelor's degrees have a cost of $500 per credit.

Most bachelor's programs require 120 credits. If you're starting fresh, with no previous credits, that's a total program tuition of $60,000. That works out to $15,000 per year over four years.

UMass Global continues to be military-friendly by offering 50% tuition to active military members and their spouses. This means that credits are $250 each, and bachelor's programs total $30,000.

In MyPath programs, students pay per six-month term rather than per credit. Each term is a flat rate of $3,200, which includes digital textbooks and materials.

Tuition for Master's Degrees and Credentials at UMass Global

Master's degrees and credential programs cost $709 per credit in the traditional online format. The total number of credits needed varies between programs, but master's degrees usually require at least 30 credits.

Active duty military members and their spouses pay a tuition of $400 per credit for traditional online master's degrees and credential programs.

Master's degrees earned through the MyPath format are $3,700 per six-month term, which again includes digital textbooks and materials.

UMass Global offers several IT bookcamps in the MyPath format through its School of Extended Education. Tuition for these programs varies but ranges between $8,500-$13,500.

Tuition for Doctoral Degrees at UMass Global

Two types of doctoral degrees are available through UMass Global: a Doctor of Education degree and a few Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees.

The Doctor of Education degree costs $1,051 per credit and requires 57 total credits. This is a total cost of $59,907 before financial aid.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree has a tuition of $1,224, and the total number of credits depends on which program you choose.

There is no discount for active-duty military members, and doctoral degrees are not available in the MyPath format.

What Financial Aid Is Available at UMass Global?

Because UMass Global is regionally accredited, students are eligible for the same financial aid opportunities like federal grants, scholarships, and student loans, that they would be at a traditional brick-and-mortar university.

Filling out your Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step to determining your federal financial aid options.

UMass Global also offers a variety of scholarships to eligible students in specific programs.
