Free Law Continuing Education (CE) for Pharmacy Technicians Overview

Pharmacy technicians are required to earn a certain number of continuing education units in order to renew their license. These credits can be earned in a variety of areas with one of them being the discussion of laws in regards to pharmaceutical practices. Technicians can identify whether or not a course falls under this subject by looking at the final number of the ACPE accreditation number which should be a three. There are several courses available within this subject field, and not all of them require a fee. Courses exist that are free of charge and provide technicians with these mandatory credits. These providers give professionals materials and information that can be used to help them become more efficient at their job, as well as ensure they are abiding by the laws associated with this career. ProCE

ProCE offers a free course called 'Product Quality Verification of Dietary Supplements' that focuses on the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). Professionals are required to watch the audio and video presentation, then take a test before they can receive credit. When technicians complete the course, they will receive credit for one contact hour.

The learning objectives in the course are as follows:

  • Components of the dietary supplement health and education act (DSHEA)
  • Requirements of the act
  • Dietary supplement voluntary quality programs
  • Educating patients on supplements
  • Correct procedure to report adverse effects

National Pharmacy Technician Association

The National Pharmacy Technician Association offers a free course called 'How Law and Medication Safety Practice Work Hand-in-Hand' and you are required to create a free account with them before gaining access to the material. Professionals will earn two contact hours after they complete the course, and it can all be done online. Students can print out the readable material if that is their preferred method of learning, and they are required to take a test before they can receive credit and print out a certificate. Members have access to more free courses in a variety of areas, but non-members are required to pay a small fee if they wish to have access.

They also offer other courses on the subject of pharmacy law for a small fee, such as:

  • Liabilities in the pharmacy and the roles of medication errors
  • HIV/AIDS for pharmacy professionals

American Pharmacists Association

The American Pharmacists Association offers a free course for members called 'APhA Pharmacy Law Matters: Legal and regulatory developments affecting pharmacy in 2018' and it provides professionals with two contact hours. It is in the form of an article, and after technicians have reviewed the material, they are required to take a test before receiving credit. The target audience for this course is any pharmacist or pharmacy technician.
