The Open University

OpenLearn, the free learning program from The Open University, provides an assortment of free personal training courses. The introductory to intermediate level courses explore different subjects, such as aerobic fitness, recovery strategies, and even nutrition. While most of the course content is freely available, if you sign up for a free account you will have access to all learning materials, including quizzes, a progress tracker, and a statement of participation when you finish each course. The courses comprise various readings and lecture notes, and some include videos and assignments. These courses cover an array of topics, including exercise prescription fundamentals; frequency, intensity, time, and type of training (FITT); the importance of recovery; the best ways to recover; and hydration, food labels, energy, and other nutrition topics. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology provides a few personal training courses through their OpenCourseWare program. These free undergraduate courses offer a variety of resources to help you on your personal training journey. You do not need to sign up for an account to access these free courses. The course on physical intelligence includes lecture notes and assignments to broaden your understanding of kinesthetics, while the course on weight training offers detailed exercise demonstration videos, as well as a reading list and lecture notes which include written instruction for the exercises covered in the videos. The books in the reading list are not included in the free course and will need to be acquired elsewhere. Also not included in the courses are weight training equipment, a workout partner, access to certain field trip locations (such as the MIT Leg Laboratory and a ropes course), and materials to complete the assignments for the physical intelligence course (such as a high-speed imaging system). American Council on Exercise

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a non-profit offering certifications for health and fitness professionals. As part of their professional resources, ACE provides a free exercise library with detailed descriptions and pictures for hundreds of individual exercises. You do not need to sign up for anything to access the learning content, but some exercises require equipment that will have to be acquired to complete the exercise. You can search for the exercise you need, as each one is categorized by experience level, equipment needed, and the body part the activity works. Examples of exercises in ACE's library include ankle flexions, chin-ups, bodyweight squats, lunges, and bear crawls. In addition to the exercise library, ACE's professional resources include free videos and articles on personal training topics.
