Keep reading to learn about the free courses offered to support Ohio teachers. Schools offering Teaching & Learning degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Free CEUs for Teachers in Ohio

Teachers in Ohio are required to renew their license every five years, and to do so they must complete six credits of education courses or 180 contact hours of approved professional development activities. For every ten hours a teacher completes, they earn a CEU (continuing education unit), and teachers are also eligible to create their own plan to achieve these credits. Teachers are required to submit an approval form prior to a specific course, but the guidelines do provide them with the flexibility to find and discover free CEU options.

There are seven standards required of a course or program to make it eligible for CEU approval in Ohio. Those standards are as follows:

  • Learning communities
  • Leadership
  • Resources
  • Data
  • Learning designs
  • Implementation
  • Outcomes

These standards provide a basis for teachers to follow when choosing courses to further them in their careers and intellect. Teachers also use these opportunities to network with other professionals and learn how to apply the skills they learn in their own classrooms. The following providers make it easy for teachers in Ohio to earn the required 18 CEUs.

Educational Service Center of Central Ohio

The Educational Service Center of Central Ohio offers a free Spring PBL Exhibition Night at the Dayton Regional Stem School where teachers can earn two contact hours for attending. It allows them the ability to see the impact project-based learning has on students, by talking with the students about their unique projects. The students have completed their STEM-based courses and the final projects showcased will help other teachers understand the importance and usefulness of this way of learning. The ESC also offers other paid CEU courses in addition to this exhibition.

Autism Certification Center

The Autism Certification Center offers a free course called The Many Faces of Autism. The course is taken online and can be completed in an hour and a half. It provides information on Autism Spectrum Disorder and strategies to help those with this condition. You are required to take a test at the end of the course, and once you pass, you will receive a free certificate. These modules provide a combination of video and text to help teachers learn a wealth of information about people who suffer from this disorder by discussing the characteristics of these ASD individuals.

The characteristics discussed by professionals within this course include:

  • Social-communication
  • Restricted interests and patterns of behavior
  • Sensory
  • Cognition and information processing
  • Emotional regulation

Other fee-based courses are offered by this provider, as well.
