Free Online Event Planning Certification

This article covers four free online resources for learning the skills needed to become an event planner. Learn about each course's scope and structure, as well as what topics event planners should study.

Overview of Free Online Event Planning Certifications

While obtaining event planning certification online for free is not possible, students can make use of many courses and resources that provide an introduction to the field. Working in event planning or management requires a diverse skillset, depending upon what type of events are the focus. The courses below do not offer college credit towards degrees or professional certificates, but they are a great starting point for anyone interested in pursuing a career in event planning. By taking advantage of free courses in fields related to event planning, such as project management, marketing, and finance, students may be more prepared to pursue further study or a career as an event planner.

Udemy

Social Media for Special Events, hosted on Udemy, focuses on best practices for digital marketing, no matter what the event is. The course teaches students how to connect with their industry online, how to utilize various social media aspects such as hashtags and QR codes, and how to drive traffic to the event's website. Traditional marketing tactics, such as lead generation, are also covered. Udemy's course offers video and audio lessons and also uses case studies. At the end of the course, supplemental resources are provided. Students can earn a certificate of completion, but this does not equate to college credits.

Eventbrite

One of the industry standards for ticketing and planning events, Eventbrite offers a free Event Sponsorship course on its website. Students will learn how to create a sponsorship strategy, how to prove ROI to potential sponsors, and how to find and secure partnerships. The course is in five parts and uses a mix of video lessons, articles, exercises, and quizzes. Free registration is required in order to access the course. Eventbrite also offers a free certification at the end of the course, but no college credit is given.

Brentwood Open Learning College

Brentwood Open Learning College has a free Event Management course, offered at the beginner level. The course covers an introduction to event management as well as event marketing. Students have access to the same resources that are used in Brentwood's paid courses, but the free versions are self-study with no deadlines. Students must sign up for a free account in order to access the course. After completing the course, students can receive a certificate of completion from Brentwood in the mail.

University of California, Irvine on Coursera

UCI's Division of Continuing Education's Initiating and Planning Projects course grants students a strong foundation in project management skills that are applicable to a wide range of events and other projects. The course focuses on determining risks and conflicts, the role of the project manager, how to identify stakeholders, and the basics of a project plan. Students can complete the course over four weeks, with two to three hours of study each week. The deadlines are flexible and can be completed at any time. UCI offers additional, more advanced courses in project management that students can also choose to take.
