What You Need to Know
You'll learn how to disassemble and reassemble locks, drill locks, identify locks by type, employ security measures for doors and frames, install electrical access systems and duplicate keys. You'll learn how to perform these tasks for businesses as well as private residences. Since you might be a beginner, your courses will present a list of locksmithing vocabulary words or phrases you may encounter in your studies.

</table><h3 id="section---HowWillICompleteMyStudies">How Will I Complete My Studies?</h3><p>As an online student, your locksmithing coursework may be mailed to you as lesson sets. Some programs require completion of an online exam after each lesson. Most online courses may be completed at your convenience from home, allowing flexible scheduling if you have a full-time job or are unable to relocate.
</p><p>Some schools offer access to an online library. Available research materials could include books, databases, research studies or trade articles. An online librarian might be available to help you via e-mail.
</p><h3 id="section---HowDoIChooseASchool">How Do I Choose a School?</h3><p>Because of the hands-on nature of locksmithing, you'll want to choose a program that provides you with a wide array of practice equipment, including pinning kits, tension wrenches, bench vices, and mortise cylinders. You'll also need access to different lock types, like door locks, tumbler locks, padlocks and master combination locks. Because of the need for hands-on training, very few schools offer online locksmithing programs. The only schools currently offering online locksmith courses are:

</li></ul><h3 id="section---WhatShouldILookForInAProgram">What Should I Look for in a Program?</h3><p>Look for programs that supply you with illustrated lesson books. Since you'll be completing this training from home, you might want to consider a program that gives you access to instructor support, an online library for research purposes or tutorial assistance. If you plan on running your own locksmithing business, look for programs that offer basic lessons in business ownership. Some online video courses are offered by professional locksmiths who are typically available if you have any questions.</p>
