Why Would I Attend a Catholic Seminary?

Roman Catholic seminaries train men for priesthood. Seminary training programs usually have various tracks that depend on your education and experience. Your goal will be to receive a master's degree in divinity with ordination as a priest in the Catholic Church.

You'll find that some seminaries offer undergraduate programs that prepare you for graduate school or that partner with local 4-year colleges for degrees in philosophy or theology. You may also earn a master's degree in philosophy.

How Do I Gain Admission to Seminary?

Beyond being a Roman Catholic male, you would need to be sponsored by a Catholic diocese or community or by a qualified official within the Catholic Church. Admission to master's degree programs requires a bachelor's degree, although some seminaries will allow you to apply if you've completed the equivalent in hours or semesters but lack the formal degree.

If you did not have an undergraduate program heavy on philosophy or theology, you'll have to complete a pre-theology program to prepare you for advanced studies. Admission to the undergraduate programs would still require you to be sponsored. You'll also need to have a high school diploma or equivalent.

What Is Life Like in a Seminary?

Though each seminary conforms to Vatican guidelines on priestly formation, each one is unique. Your experience will be different at each one. You can expect to spend a significant amount of time engaged in a routine of prayer, ceremony, study and service that is designed to help you discern whether priesthood is the right vocation for you. Beyond that, seminary life is a focused, cloistered environment where you will pray, study, eat, sleep and recreate with the same group of peers for several years.

Students who want to study in a Catholic seminary setting can do so with undergraduate- or graduate-level work. Some bachelor's degree programs offer a fast-track setting for students to acquire their master's degree.
