Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD)

The MCAD credential targets professional developers who use Microsoft.NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 and Microsoft Visual Studio.NET to write, maintain, and develop back-end data services, desktop or Web clients, and applications. Certification involves passing two core exams and one elective test. Unfortunately, Microsoft has retired, as of March 2009, many of the exams needed to obtain this certification. Individuals who use MS Visual Studio 2005 and MS.NET Framework 2.0 are encouraged to try for MCTS (MS Certified Technology Specialist) and or MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer).


IBM offers a certified application developer credential, targeting developers at the intermediate-level that uses DB2 9 software. These developers must pass two exams to earn this certification. Developers can attain this certification by passing one test. IBM also offers IBM Certified Application Developer - Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5, which requires passing one test and obtaining one certification.


Oracle offers the Certified Professional Java ME 1 Mobile Application Developer credential. Developers who use Java technologies to program mobile applications for smart devices or cell phones should consider obtaining this credential. One must have the Oracle Certified Professional, Java Programmer (SE 5 or SE 6), or a Sun Certified Programmer (SCJP) credential before attempting this certification. Mobile application developer certification requires the individual to pass one exam. This exam was formerly known as the Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer (SCMAD).
