Typical Graduate School Entrance Requirements

The majority of graduate schools have similar entrance requirements, however, specific programs may have requirements that are unique. All graduate schools require a completed admissions application and official transcripts from every undergraduate and/or graduate school attended. Applicants are often expected to submit an essay or statement of purpose explaining why they want or need a master's degree. Other common admissions documents include personal, academic, and/or professional letters of recommendation and an updated résumé or a curriculum vitae. Finally, many programs require applicants to have a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average, often 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Common Courses in Master of Social Work Programs

Even though the structure of each graduate program in social work is unique, there are common topics within most social work programs. Foundational courses in subjects such as human behavior and social environments and advanced courses in subjects such as research in social work and clinical social work are offered in most traditional programs.

Behaviors and Environments

This course studies the theories of social, psychological, biological, and spiritual development. Students use these theories to examine how their social work practice is influenced. Diversity issues such as race, gender, and age are given focus when working with individuals within their own environments.

Social Work Research

Students use quantitative and qualitative methodologies to conduct social work research. This requires analyzing data and using statistical procedures. As a result, students are expected to utilize the results of their research to develop best practices.

Clinical Social Work

These courses focus on group counseling. They address subjects such as group dynamics, group roles, and leadership styles within groups. Legal and ethical matters related to clinical group interventions are also studied.

Graduate schools in New Jersey that offer MSW degrees have a variety of specializations and concentrations from which to choose. Careers in school social work, mental health counseling, and addiction counseling are just a few of the options available to individuals with an MSW degree and appropriate licensure.
