What Courses Will I Take in an Audio Engineering Bachelor's Degree Program?

Audio engineering is a multi-disciplinary program that draws on principles from musical arts and engineering. In the program, you're trained in the operation of analog and digital audio and recording equipment. You will learn the theoretical and technical processes of recording, mixing and editing sounds. Additionally, you study the fundamentals of MIDI.

Introductory classes are provided in audio and recording technology, music theory and music history. You will be exposed to electrical circuitry, control systems and audio software. You also explore the business aspects of the music industry through classes in business strategies, marketing practices and distribution procedures. Prior to graduation, you may be required to complete a capstone or final project. Other topics covered in the program include:

Is This Degree Offered Online?

Bachelor's degrees in audio engineering are rarely offered fully online due to the hands-on application needed for working with audio hardware and software. However, hybrid programs offering some online classes are available. To take an online course, you will need access to a broadband Internet connection and a computer with word processing software. As an online student, you will complete classes via an online course management system and use various communication tools, like e-mail, IM software and chat programs.

What Can I Do With This Degree?

A bachelor's degree in audio engineering will prepare you for entry-level careers in broadcasting networks, recording studios, theatre productions and video games. You'll also be qualified for audio engineer positions in film and video industries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected employment growth of eight percent for broadcast and sound engineering technicians between 2016 and 2026, which is about average compared to all occupations. The annual mean wages for sound engineering technicians in May 2018 was $63,500.
