The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the common provider of certification for these workers and offers a wide range of credentialing programs for mechanics; however, you may find that the Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist designation is the most suitable ASE certification option for forklift mechanics. What are the Requirements?

To become ASE certified as an Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist, you must have at least two years of work experience in the field and pass a certification exam. Additionally, before qualifying to sit for this exam, you need to be ASE certified in one of eight preliminary areas, which are focused on the diesel engines or electrical/electronic systems of automobiles/light trucks, transit buses, school buses or medium/heavy trucks. These preliminary certifications do not have prerequisites, though they do require passage of a series of exams. After becoming certified, you must renew your credentials every five years by taking a recertification exam.

What Do I Need to Know for the Exam?

The certification exam for the Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist designation assesses your ability to identify complex problems with diesel engines that are controlled by computer interfaces. The exam's 45 multiple-choice questions are divided among four areas of diagnostics that include general inspection, fuel systems, electronic engine controls and air induction/exhaust systems. The recertification exam also takes on this format and covers the same topics. The ASE offers a study guide to help you prepare for the examination.
