Overview of a Preschool Teacher

Preschool teachers typically work with children ages 3-5, although some programs and teachers work with children from birth to age five. They develop the curriculum and engage children in learning through a number of methods including play, music and art. Preschool teachers are equipped with the skills to assess children's language, social, emotional and motor skill development.

Required Education

The Head Start program or any other state-funded programs typically require an associate degree or bachelor's degree. Associate degree programs are geared towards students interested in working within a preschool, day care or in-home environments or for those wanting to transfer to a 4-year bachelor's program. These programs introduce you to topics in child development and assessment, interactive and creative learning, language arts and classroom management.

Completing a 4-year bachelor's degree program in early childhood education prepares you for gaining state licensure. In addition to the topics covered in a 2-year program, bachelor's degree programs also cover teaching specific subjects to young children, as well as extensive psychology and sociology courses. Programs may include an internship requirement.

Licensure

States do vary on licensure requirements so it's important to check with your state where you intend to teach. Associate degree holders may also be required to complete the Child Development Associate (CDA) credentialing process in order to be licensed to work with Head Start or state-funded programs. CDA applicants must have 120 hours of formal training and 480 hours of professional experience. Applicants must also submit to a formal observation, provide references and demonstrate skills.

Occupational Statistics

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), preschool teachers can expect a significant increase in job opportunities between 2014 and 2024, an estimated 7%. Preschool teachers, except those working in special education, earn a median annual income of $28,120.
