What You Need to Know

The majority of the programs in medical assisting offered near Chicago lead to certificates, although at least one associate's degree program is available in the area. Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll in a certificate program; however, students must be 18 years old to become certified in the field. A certificate in medical assisting may be earned in three to four semesters while an associate's degree as a medical assistant requires two years of study. Practicum classes, such as phlebotomy, externships, and/or internships are required of all medical assisting programs.
