General Psychologists

General psychologists work in settings such as private practices, hospitals and psychiatric clinics. They provide counseling services to improve clients' mental and emotional well-being and can meet with individuals or groups. They also administer tests to determine clients' vocational aptitude, intelligence and personality type. General psychologists often utilize many different therapeutic techniques like cognitive therapy, psychotherapy and behavior modification to treat patients.

Clinical Psychologists

Clinical psychologists work in medical facilities, such as psychiatric hospitals and clinics. There, they treat patients with acute mental disorders or emotional issues. Clinical psychologists who work in hospitals help surgery patients and accident victims recover emotionally. They also provide counseling services to chronically disabled or terminal patients. There is some overlap between clinical and general psychology, but clinical psychologists often work with patients with more debilitating problems than general psychologists do.

Industrial Psychologists

Industrial psychologists are often in charge of maximizing employee morale and productivity in different work environments. They design and implement programs that make workplaces safer and more pleasant and sometimes design training and orientation programs for new employees. Industrial psychology is one of the few psychological disciplines that only requires a master's degree instead of a doctorate.
