During the first two years of the program, students begin learning the language. Following language instruction, students partake in German culture, literature and conversation courses, like German civilization, Nazi medicine and business German. German majors are required to study abroad in Vienna, Austria; Freiburg, Germany; or Berlin, Germany for a portion of the program. It is also possible to earn a minor in the field, which also requires students to take German language courses. </p><h3 id="section---OregonStateUniversity">Oregon State University</h3><p>Students at Oregon State University can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree or a minor in German, and some courses are offered online. These may be available in standalone formats for non-degree-seeking or post-baccalaureate students. The German major requires students to complete several advanced language courses, as well as classes in German culture, literature and cinema, and students have many free electives. Furthermore, all majors must complete an internship or participate in a study abroad program. Candidates must demonstrate their language proficiency before graduation. </p><h3 id="section---UniversityOfWisconsinMadison">University of Wisconsin - Madison</h3><p>The Department of German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as a minor and a certificate program.
